Redbud provides a lot for the local ecosystem while also not making a huge demand on a landscape. Eastern redbuds do not require a lot of space, but they really stand out in the early spring with brilliant purple to pink blooms when other trees are mostly dormant. The early flowers are an important source of nectar for several species of native bees. Redbud flowers are also interesting because they are cauliflorous, meaning they are attached directly to the branches and stems all over the tree.

During spring, tree boring insects in their larval stage will begin feeding inside trees. Bronze birch borer is one example that is a serious pest in our area. Based on an assessment, we can provide effective treatments to minimize damage and help prevent a full-blown infestation.

Apple scab impacts many varieties of apple and crabapple trees. The first sign of the disease is the appearance of smoky or smudgy spots on leaves. Taking action at bud break, before symptoms become apparent, will provide the most effective control.

The thick fruiting body of 'Inonotus dryadeus' varies in size from 5 to 30 centimeters. Its velvety upper surface is cream to rusty brown with a yellower margin and is pitted with tubes up to 3 cm deep which ooze an orange-brown liquid when the fruit body is young, hence the name "weeping conk". The flesh is soft and fibrous, yellow brown in color and has an unpleasant odor.

Pine Needle Scale is a microscopic insect that overwinters as an egg under the scale formed by the mother. The scale causes damage by inserting its mouthparts into the needle and extracting sap. Lady beetles, parasites and weather contribute to the natural control of the scale. When natural controls fail, serious damage can be prevented by applying insecticides.

If you grow your own fruit, chances are you are harvesting now and may find this sort of damage on your property.
