Summer is an ideal time to assess the health of your trees and shrubs

We have had a cold start to spring this year, but within 48 hours have gone straight into the heat of mid-summer. As summer progresses, it is wise to monitor the plants in your garden or landscape for signs of stress, as well as indications of pest or disease activity—in particular, mites, scale insects and other sap-feeding pests that may be present.

Symptoms of diseases that began in spring may also become more apparent. Some common signs to look out for include the following:

  1. Wilting, discolouration, spots or bumps on leaves
  2. Branch dieback or buds that failed to leaf out
  3. Decay fungi on the trunk or root flare
  4. Stained areas or oozing liquid on the trunk or around the roots
  5. Presence of defoliating insects
  6. Sap-feeding insects producing sticky honeydew, which can lead to sooty mould growth
  7. Sawdust-like debris caused by wood-boring insects
  8. Early autumn colour and leaf drop

Whereas some signs may point to minor issues that require little or no action, others may indicate a more serious problem that could worsen if left unchecked. Correct diagnosis is the first step in providing appropriate plant health care recommendations. A certified arborist can help by identifying what to look for in relation to the species being assessed, taking samples where needed for accurate diagnosis, and recommending suitable management to help keep your trees healthy. Please contact your local Bartlett Arborist Representative to arrange a complimentary summer review of your trees and shrubs.
