Insect pest alert: scale insects
Spring is when many sap-sucking pests become active, including types of scales, aphids and mites. These tiny insects can infest virtually any type of tree or shrub. Now is the best time to identify and treat for damaging populations.

Tick management
Given the likelihood of encountering ticks, it is important to know that controlling tick populations in your landscape is possible. The first step is assessing your landscape for common habitats like wooded areas, leaf litter and ornamental beds. Based on the assessment, treatments can specifically target at-risk areas.

Inaugural tree climbing academy
This week, we are starting an inaugural tree climbing Academy in Wheaton Maryland. This is a partnership with Montgomery Parks and Casey trees. Throughout the week, we plan to introduce and train applicants in arboriculture in an effort to give back to the community, help communicate that arboriculture is a year-round profession, and to recruit future teammates.

Don't miss these warning signs
Trees under stress display key symptoms indicating a serious problem may exist. This includes wilting or loss of leaves/needles, yellowing of leaves or browning of needles, premature autumn color, early leaf drop and sappy spots on branches. Correctly identifying the underlying cause is critical to addressing tree health issues.

Spotted lanternfly
Eggs hatch in mid-May. Nymphs feed on many plants. Adults appear late August - November. Adults favor tree-of-heaven and maples. Adults also commonly attack walnuts, sycamores, and willows. Nymphs and adults damage by sucking plant sap, which can produce honeydew. Please contact your local extension agent if this is the first detection of spotted lanternfly in your area.

University of Maryland Forestry Camp
Bartlett Tree Experts along with the University of Maryland Natural Resources Forestry Camp is hosting the first inaugural camp for 20 high school students interested in arboriculture. Students will learn climbing and pruning basics. They will also learn how to use and maintain their gear. Look at them in the trees!

Bagworms are hatching now!
Removing and destroying the bags can reduce light bagworm infestations on shrubs and small trees. However, this should be done before eggs hatch. On conifers and other plants with heavy infestations, management is frequently necessary. Please contact your Bartlett Arborist Representative for information on effective control of this pest.
