Eucalyptus globulus
Eucalyptus is an evergreen tree more commonly known as the Gum tree, an imported exotic tree originating from Australia. Grown for its interesting bark, flowers and aromatic foliage. Rapid growth rates can be achieved (i.e., 0.6 to1.5m per year) depending on soil and climatic conditions. Most species grow to a height of 30 to 35 metres .

Culture
Eucalyptus grow optimally in a fertile well drained soil in full sunlight. Eucalyptus are frost tender when young and should be protected if possible. When mature the tree can withstand temperatures down to negative 5 degrees C. Trees should also be protected from high winds.
Concerns
Eucalyptus are prone to pests and disease throughout their life cycle. The most critical include Eucalyptus sucker, Phytophthora, silver leaf, canker, and galls.
Management
Sample soils for nutrient and pH levels in spring or autumn. Remediate where necessary. If plants exhibit decline, sample roots or root collar for Phytophthora root rot. If detected use phosphite/subdue soil drenches. Treat foliage preventatively for suckers. Spray with an appropriate insecticide at 3 to 4 week intervals commencing in May. Prune out silver leaf and/or canker disease and treat using fungicide sprays.
