July 23, 2022 Derek Wells Bartlett Tree Experts 109 Industrial Village Rd Beaufort, SC, 29901 Dear Derek Wells, As founder of the educational nonprofit Pat Conroy Literary Center, I speak for the entire board of directors and our many storytelling volunteers as I write to thank you and Bartlett Tree Experts for adopting this historically important Live Oak Tree. It has special meaning for us that the Stamford, Connecticut based company, without question the most respected group of America’s arborists, has taken this on, deepening the connections between our two states. This tree forever connects Beaufort, SC with the 29th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry members who came here in 1864 to learn to be soldiers. In fact, it was the attached photographs residing at the Beaufort Historical Society of the 29th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry practicing muster in the shade of this magnificent Oak tree that has inspired so much local interest in protecting and preserving this tree. Beaufort County has been designated by the National Parks Service as the Reconstruction National Historic Park. On their website, the Park Service writes: “The Reconstruction era,1861-1900 the historic period in which the United States grappled with the question of how to integrate millions of newly freed African Americans into social, political, economic, and labor systems, was a time of significant transformation. The people, places, and events in Beaufort County, South Carolina, reflect on the most important issues of this tumultuous time period. With gratitude for your generosity and kind regards.

Derrick Wells is great. Not only was he prompt for our first on-site meeting, but he really took the time to hear my concerns and also edify me about certain species on my new property. He forwarded the proposal quickly, and worked with me to quickly edit it, and then forwarded me the corrected one quickly. The work was done quickly, and when a couple of list items were missed by the crew, Derrick was out in a flash to double check everything and then call the crew back to finish and they did that quickly, too. Another tree company’s professional advice leaned toward replacement of the Boxwoods, a very expensive proposition. I can guess thousands of dollars due to the number of shrubs in our courtyard.
