I have a woodpecker that has created some big holes in the trunk of a mature maple. I’m concerned about the health of the tree as a result. How can I fill the hole and stop the continuation of the burrowing?

It’s generally not recommended to fill cavities in trees. Filling can trap moisture, promote decay, and obscure hidden issues that may require attention. Instead, make an appointment to assess the tree's overall health. We can recommend appropriate measures to protect the tree and discourage further woodpecker activity, such as using physical barriers or repellents.
