Heavy, wet snows can decimate landscape plantings especially evergreen shrubs and trees such as boxwood, Rhododendron, arborvitae and hemlock. Removing the snow can help prevent breakage but it must be done carefully because stems and branches can be quite brittle in freezing weather. When removing snow, the lower portion of the stem or branch should be supported by hand while brushing off snow with your other hand. Avoid vigorously shaking the plant or hitting the plant vigorously with a broom. This can cause as much damage as the snow.
