Sap-sucking Insects

Sap-sucking insects feed on plant nutrients and can infest virtually any tree or shrub species causing damage to foliage and tree health issues.  These pests are typically small, including many different types of mites, aphids and scale insects.  Presence of sap-sucking insects can result in a range of symptoms including:

  • Branch and tip dieback
  • Withered leaves
  • Premature leaf drop or loss of needles
  • A coating of sooty mold
  • The presence of sticky sap or honeydew

When these symptoms are present, it is important to have an arborist check the plant and determine the underlying cause.  Infestations are much easier to control when they can be identified early and treatments timed appropriately.
