Preparing plants for summer

Summer is a good time to prune your trees and shrubs to help maintain their size and shape. Major pruning performed before flower buds set in late summer will enhance next year’s bloom. Over the coming months, it is important to ensure that your plants receive the proper amount of water. Newly planted trees and shrubs should be watered approximately twice each week when no rain occurs. Here’s a checklist that will help prepare your plants for summer:

1. Have your plants inspected for early symptoms of poor health.

2. Water your plants each week or more often for newly planted trees and shrubs.

3. Inspect your trees and shrubs for pests and diseases that commonly arrive during hot, dry weather.

4. Assess your trees for dead branches and structural weaknesses that can be pruned later in winter.
