Gather Up Diseased Leaves

Now that autumn is firmly upon us, it is important to remember the trees that had pests and diseases during the summer months -- in particular, those that showed signs of Scab, Powdery Mildew and Leaf Miner. Fallen leaves from these trees can contribute to fungal spores and adult insects re-infecting the tree the following year. The simple solution to reducing the population level of these pests and diseases is to rake up all the fallen leaves and incinerate them. This is an old garden practice, but one that is still very valid today and a great form of garden husbandry. Put leaves and small twigs in a galvanized incinerator and burn them, then spread the ash over a soiled bed to fertilise. A simple galvanized incinerator can be bought from the garden centre for around £15/€20.
