A Technical Report from The Bartlett Tree Research Laboratories
The red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta) was accidentally introduced into the United States from Brazil in the 1930s, and now infests 18 southern, midwestern, and western states. These ants reproduce rapidly and build mounds in almost any type of soil but prefer open, sunny areas such as pastures, parks, golf courses, and home lawns.
