Oak Bracket or Weeping Conk (Inonotus dryadeus)

The thick fruiting body of 'Inonotus dryadeus' varies in size from 5 to 30 centimeters. Its velvety upper surface is cream to rusty brown with a yellower margin and is pitted with tubes up to 3 cm deep which ooze an orange-brown liquid when the fruit body is young, hence the name "weeping conk". The flesh is soft and fibrous, yellow brown in color and has an unpleasant odor.

Winter Tree Inspection

Colder temperatures and shorter days serve as a reminder that it’s time for your trees and shrubs to have a winter check-up. Now is the time to uncover issues such as weakly attached branches, dead wood, diseases, pest infestations and other problems before they can cause serious damage in the spring.

Clothes Moth (Tineola bisselliella)

How to Control the Common Clothes Moth

  • Vacuum and regularly clean areas where you might find clothes moths. For example, rugs, carpets, draperies, furniture cushions, inside closets, near and around heaters and vents.
  • Try not to accumulate and store large amounts of woolens or items made from animal products.
  • Properly clean and store pest-free items in air-tight containers.

Pine Needle Scale (Chionaspis pinifoliae)

Pine Needle Scale is a microscopic insect that overwinters as an egg under the scale formed by the mother. The scale causes damage by inserting its mouthparts into the needle and extracting sap. Lady beetles, parasites and weather contribute to the natural control of the scale. When natural controls fail, serious damage can be prevented by applying insecticides.

Autumn Planting Tips

Follow these steps to properly plant a tree:

  1. Dig the planting hole three times the exposed. You may have to remove soil width of the tree's root ball. Roots grow that was covering the root collar while outwards more than down.
  2. Cut off any wire or burlap from the root ball. Loosen the soil in the ball and prepared hole, be sure that the root try to spread the roots out. It is very important to cut away any circling roots. Make sure that the tree's root collar (the area of transition from trunk to roots) is exposed. You may have to remove soil that was covering the root collar in the pot.
  3. When placing the tree in the prepared hole, be sure that the root collar is at the soil surface. A straight edge across the hole is a good guide to check that the tree is not set too low in the planting hole. You will likely need to put some dirt back into the hole to get the tree positioned correctly.
  4. Put a 2- to 3-inch layer of organic mulch over the soil surface after planting. Do not mound it up around the base of the trunk.
  5. Give your new tree a good watering.

European Pine Shoot Moths

First discovered in Canada in 1925, signs of a European Pine Shoot Moths infestation by these insects include dry, twisted needles at the ends of twigs, accumulations of resin around buds, and withered buds, causing the worst damage in spring.

The moths attack freshly opened buds, migrating from bud to bud, and later penetrate inside the shoots where they dig tunnels and stay over winter.

Everyone was friendly, and approachable, all our questions were answered. We are very happy to have found a company to take care of our trees and has been around long enough that we know you will be there whenever our trees need you.
Yvonne C., Duncan, BC

Efficient and friendly service provided all round. Little to improve on. Nathan, my representative, is prompt, and always courteous. He is also very knowledgeable in his field and I have confidence in his recommendations and advice. Other crew members are hard working, and industrious, do a great job, and always leave my property cleared when finished. They are also courteous and walk the property with me before starting any project, which I appreciate. Overall very satisfied with Bartlett Tree Experts.

I recently had the pleasure of working with Bartlett Tree Experts for the pruning of a mature tree on my property. From start to finish, the experience was nothing short of exceptional. The team was incredibly professional, arriving on time, and being responsive throughout the entire process. What stood out the most was their meticulous approach to pruning. Watching them climb and navigate the branches with such care and expertise was truly impressive. They ensured that each cut was made with precision, taking great care to preserve the health and aesthetics of the tree. The cleanup was thorough, leaving no trace of debris behind. I am very pleased with the outcome and highly recommend Bartlett Tree Experts for anyone looking for top-notch tree care. I do not know that you could have done anything to make my experience better since I was completely satisfied. I called you to have an on site assessment and quote. You arrived at the agreed upon time. Your quote was more than reasonable so I agreed to your proposal. Your crew arrived promptly on the scheduled day and performed their tasks professionally and with great efficiency. I was concerned about some budding plants being damaged in the process but your crew took care to work around them. Many thanks to you and your staff for a completely positive experience. I will not hesitate to recommend your company to my friends and to rehire you in the future. It is not very often that I have a completely positive experience but this was one of them. Thank you for doing exactly what I asked for, at the agreed upon price.

The crew worked efficiently, there was no standing around, when the climber needed men on the ground, the pruning fellows came over, did what was needed, and went back to their work. The pruning was excellent, considering the poor condition of the fruit trees. At several trees, the climbers could use neither spurs nor ladders, and hoisted themselves up, and did the work safely. At no time was there any concern about the safety of their work habits. They have a very good instinct for pruning and there is no looking and head-scratching and it got done quickly. They are extremely pleasant young men with no bravado or showing off. I hope Bartlett appreciate what you have got.
Rasmus R., Sooke, BC

We have been with Bartlett for more than fifteen years, mostly from our time living at Bushby St. in Victoria, but for the past three years, here in Mill Bay. At all times the work we have had done by Bartlett has been to the highest professional standards. Moreover, the Advisors and crews personal performances have always been exemplary, especially so when they have had to deal with neighbours of ours who did not have the same appreciation of trees and shrubs that we have. We are also very much aware of Bartlett's community outreach with Garden Clubs here in the Mill Bay region. In summary, we are huge fans of Bartlett and whenever the opportunity arises, which it often does, as many people come to visit our spectacular property we do not hesitate to recommend Bartlett.
Randy B., Mill Bay, BC

We are completely satisfied with our relationship with Nathan and all his crew members that have worked on our property. They are friendly, courteous, and competent at all times. Recommended highly for all our arborist requirements. They are a quality company.
