I have a large spruce tree that is infested with carpenter ants. They have tunneled into the tree at two places. Can the tree be saved and what steps should be taken to save the tree?
To save the tree, the best options are to have a Plant Health Care program to treat for carpenter ants, to apply prescription soil fertilization according to soil sampling, and to crown clean the tree of any deadwood. Depending on the location, we sometimes recommend Root Invigoration, which greatly improves the health of the tree whether suffering from stress or if it is in need of nutrient stimulation. I would recommend setting an appointment to have a certified arborist inspect the tree.
