Will removing small sucker branches from the lower trunk of a mature oak trees improve the overall tree health?
The tree grows these sprouts as a stress response, when there is a need for more leaf area (photosynthetic potential), or in response to new sunlight. Some gentle sucker removal for aesthetic purposes is okay in many cases, but not always. Sprouts also serve the purpose of protecting bark that is exposed to direct sunlight.
