What are the black spots on the leaves of all the maple trees in our area?

The black spots are from a harmless fungus causing a disease known as tar spot. The fungus has been more prolific these last few years and is especially prevalent on maples. It causes no harm however. It is best to rake the leaves and dispose of them at the end of the season to hopefully lessen the re-occurrence but that is no guarantee.
