I have a mature Bartlett Pear tree. While close to it today, I noticed that there are hundreds and hundreds of lined holes in the bark. The tree still appears very healthy and I'd like to preserve it and wondering if there's anything I can do to save it. Also, I'd like a professional to prune my trees this fall, and afterwards annually.
The holes that you see lined in the bark are most likely sapsucker holes. These birds go after water under the bark and sometime tiny insects. Unfortunately there is nothing that we can do for the birds not to peck on the trees. You are welcome to call our office at 415-472-4300 and schedule an appointment for a property review. We can then talk about annual pruning.
