I'm purchasing a new home and there is a tree leaning in the backyard. Do you think that this might present an issue?

There's no such thing as a safe tree. Yes, leaning trees present a problem, but can often be mitigated. Sometimes you can prune to reduce weight and wind load. Sometimes you can fertilize to beef up the root system. Sometimes you just have to take a commonsense look at these trees and try to decide for yourself if they look like they're going to be an asset and contribute to your enjoyment of your new home, or are they more of a liability, in which case you should get them out of your life and plant some better trees in a spot in the yard that makes more sense.
