I've lived in my house for 17 years and we have a beautiful Japanese maple that seems to be dying. Leaves are small and there are many dead branches, though no visible bugs and no known trauma to the tree. Is there something to look for or remedy?

Japanese maples are susceptible to a vascular disease called verticillium wilt or girdling roots. I strongly recommend you have a certified arborist come look at the tree to see if it can be salvaged.
