Called \u201cone of the handsomest, cleanest and stateliest trees in North America\u201d by naturalist Joseph S. Illick, the northern red oak is widely considered a national treasure. This tree is valued for its adaptability and hardiness in urban settings. The northern red oak is also one of the most important oaks for timber production; used for furniture, flooring, and veneer. It is native to most regions of the U.S. near and east of the Mississippi River, excluding the Deep South.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3544\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3544\" style=\"width: 1280px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a title=\"Northern red oak in early autumn\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bartlett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/northern-red-oak-autumn-01.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-1\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3544 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bartlett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/northern-red-oak-autumn-medium.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3544\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Northern red oak in early autumn<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Culture<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Prefers fertile, well-drained, moist soils, but is adaptable to dry to medium moisture.<\/li>\n<li>Can tolerate urban conditions, but will not perform well in alkaline (high) soil pH.<\/li>\n<li>Roots can interfere with sidewalks and other infrastructure.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Concerns<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Boring insects can attack weakened or stressed trees.<\/li>\n<li>Defoliating caterpillars like winter moth, cankerworm and gypsy moth can cause defoliation.
