This tall, narrow tree can reach heights over 50 feet, but is rarely more than 15 feet wide. Cypress can be very long-lived; some trees are reported to be over 1,000 years old!<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3544\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3544\" style=\"width: 1280px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a title=\"Italian cypress\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bartlett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/italian-cypress-01.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-1\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3544 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bartlett.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/italian-cypress-medium.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"853\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3544\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Italian cypress forming a natural barrier (right)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Culture<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Drought tolerant once established.<\/li>\n<li>Performs best in sandy, well-drained soils of slightly acidic pH.<\/li>\n<li>Less established or root-restricted trees are only moderately drought tolerant.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Concerns<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Commonly infested with spider mites, leading to bronzing or dusty appearance.<\/li>\n<li>Also susceptible to armored scale infestation (Minute cypress scale).<\/li>\n<li>Phytophthora root and crown rot is common with deep planting, over-irrigation, or poor drainage.<\/li>\n<li>Branch dieback due to Seiridium canker is also common on stressed plants.<\/li>\n<li>Often planted in large groups, leading to poor planting practices and buried root collars.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Bartlett Management Practices<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Excavate root collar area.<\/li>\n<li>Treat preventatively against Phytophthora in heavily irrigated or poorly drained sites.<\/li>\n<li>Monitor for mites and scale and treat as warranted.<\/li>\n<li>Minimal pruning requirements; remove dead branches and occasional bent\/broken branches extending outside natural shape.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;A Drought-Tolerant Favorite&#8221; Italian cypress (Cupressus sempervirens), also known as Mediterranean cypress, has been used in formal gardens and around buildings for centuries.
